William (Bill) Hiscott
Oct. 5, 1951 – Jun. 18, 2023
Bill passed away peacefully on Sunday June 18th, in his 71st year, following a long-term struggle with chronic lung disease.
He was born in Toronto and raised in Rexdale by his aunt and uncle Vi & Bob MacBeth. During his adult life Bill never strayed far away from Weston, Ontario where he felt most at home, put down roots and made many connections. He spent his last few months in the palliative ward of St. Peter’s in Hamilton.
His cousins Lori & Elaine MacBeth would especially like to express their profound thanks to the compassionate and dedicated staff at St. Peter’s for their wonderful care during Bill’s stay there.
Throughout his life, Bill’s resilient character served him well, allowing him to overcome the many challenges thrown his way. He persevered no matter what. He made the most of his last few months, even if some days that simply meant enjoying the fresh air and sunshine in the garden.
Bill held many jobs over the years. No matter where he worked, his strong work ethic meant he was always an industrious, conscientious and reliable employee. He was a sous chef at Holiday Inn and the Old Mill in Etobicoke early in his career. He was most fond of his time working at Weston Golf & Country Club where he could get outdoors. The work he was most proud of however, was the effort and dedication he put in to achieving his sobriety and to completing the 12-step program.
Bill had a variety of interests and hobbies, and he was curious by nature. If a topic interested him, he would dig in and learn all about it. Largely self-taught, he was skilled at drawing, developed a green thumb, and could also hold forth in detail and at length on any topic of current affairs. He always had an interesting fact or piece of insight to contribute to any conversation.
Bill valued his independence and fiercely guarded his privacy. Those who he let into his inner circle knew him to be a kind and caring friend. His empathy for others was well-suited to the role of AA sponsor that he embraced. His legacy will undoubtedly be the help he provided, and the positive impact he had on many people in this regard.
Bill will be fondly remembered and deeply missing by his family and friends.
If you would like to make a donation in Bill's honour the family would appreciate a donation, be made in his memory to St. Peter's Palliative Care.
