Unexpectedly passed away Friday, February 11, 2011. He is survived by his dear wife Judith Anna, his sons Phillip (Brigitte), Jeffrey, his daughter Elizabeth (Mark). Especially proud grandfather of Zelda and Thor. Dear brother Henry Armstrong (Fay) of Ottawa. Favorite uncle of Scott (Kathy), Barbara (John) and Nancy. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba December 13,1928. Bill spent the last 32 years living in Oakville, Ontario.
A third generation railroader, he grew up in the Steep Rock Railway Station to father William Arthur Laird Armstrong and mother Archena Conner. Bill graduated from St. John’s College School in Winnipeg where as an avid athlete he graduated as School Captain. He went on to work in the Athletic Department at Pickering College where he inspired and coached many budding athletes. He later studied business at Ryerson.
He joined the railway and spent many years working for Canadian National Railways and Transport Canada. He became one of the country’s most valued and dedicated health and safety officers. Upon retiring in 2002, Bill was celebrated as one of the longest serving public servant in Canada with 50 years of service.
Bill’s years were also filled with raising and coaching his children, as well as, hundreds of local children in hockey and soccer. He was a member of the Probus Club of North Oakville and lifetime Free Mason of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba. In addition to spending time with his family, he loved golfing, gardening and conversation. He was well known and loved throughout his community.
Visitation will be held at Ward Funeral Home in Oakville from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm on Wednesday February 16th and the funeral will be held in Oakville at Trinity United Church at 1 pm on Thursday February 17th.
