Wilfred Newby, 83, chemist, avid science fiction reader, opera enthusiast, chess player and long-time member of the Salvation Army church passed away on Thursday May 2, 2019 at his home in Etobicoke. Wilf was the beloved brother of Doreen Coletta and cherished uncle of Andrea (Carl) Greenhous and Allison (David) Gibbons. He was the very special “Great Uncle Wilf” to Olivia Gregoire, Aidan Gregoire, Darcy Gibbons and Kendra Gibbons. He was predeceased by his parents Leonard Newby and Margaret (Carse) Newby who were both Salvation Army officers. Wilf had many academic achievements most notably a PhD in electrochemistry and post-doctoral studies in England. He was an intellectual who was endlessly curious about the cosmos. He was always well-informed about current events and had a strong social conscience. Wilf was unfailingly kind to everyone and especially devoted to his family, never missing an opportunity to take the long drive to eastern Ontario to spend weekends with them in the country. A special thank you to neighbour Rob Harris and family for your kindness and caring for Wilf over the years. Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 17 at 11:00 am at the Salvation Army Etobicoke Temple Community Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the The Salvation Army Etobicoke Temple Community Church, 2152 Kipling Avenue, Etobicoke M9W 4K9. Please visit the Book of Memories at www.wardfuneralhome.com
