On Monday May 16th,2022 Walter Korchuk, peacefully passed away at St. Joseph’s Health Center in Toronto with family by his side.

Walter was born on April 6, 1938 in Edson Alberta to Natalie and Nicholas Korchuk. Walter was the brother to Stanley (deceased), Alexander (deceased), Vera (George) and Paul, husband of the late Margaret (Rita) Martyniuk, father to Carolyn Petley and Teresa Selander, grandfather to Iris (Colin), Joseph, Luke (Moyuru), Claire, Alexandra and Quintin and great-grandfather to David, Anna and George.

In 1944, after farming for several years in Alberta, the Korchuk family relocated to Cookstown Ontario to continue farming.

Walter graduated from Banting Memorial High School, Alliston. He joined the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force in 1959 and retired as a detective in 1989. He loved to share stories of his days on the force which he remembered with great joy. He was very proud of his long service where his keen sense of fairness to those less advantaged shone through.

After retiring in 1992, Walter moved to Buffalo to join his new wife, Rita. (deceased 2006) After Rita’s passing Walter chose to stay in the Buffalo area, as he had a wonderful circle of friends and created new friends in his neighbourhood on Union Rd. Within the complex Walter was the “Mayor” who continued to use his valuable policing skills to create an atmosphere of respect and community with his diverse neighbours.

Walter became an avid golfer in his retirement and spent many happy hours walking the links from Muskoka to Sarasota. During winters in Sarasota he welcomed family and friends, enjoying the attractions and sights of the area.

Walter was a fisherman, curler and bowler over the years and would never turn down a friendly game of poker with his buddies.

He had a passion for current events, world news, history and politics and placing the odd bet on sporting events with friends. He was well informed and had many interesting perspectives and commentary which he didn’t hesitate to share.

Walter was a man who spoke more with his actions and less with his words. He was a good listener and when he spoke, he spoke with intention and out of love for those around him. Most of all Walter, our brother, father, grandfather and friend showed us all how to accept forgiveness.

Walter will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A funeral service will be held at St. Georges-on-the-Hill, 4600 Dundas St. West, Etobicoke Ontario at 13:00 hours. Following the service all are invited to 31 Old Oak Road for refreshments.
