Vinko Jelenic
It is with a very heavy heart that we share the passing of Vinko Jelenic on May 21, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre at the wonderful age of 96. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Laura, of 74 years, children Nevia (Roman), Venanzio (Janice), Sandra (Gino).
Vinko was a loving grandfather to grandchildren Robert, predeceased by Thomas, Steven, Michael, Silvia, step-grandfather to Nick and Anne, great-great-grandfather to Philip, Emma, Cameron and Max. He is survived by his older sister, Maria still residing in Istria, Croatia.
Vinko was born in 1927 the small village of Lucianj, Istria, and the fourth of five children. At the age of 17, he was drafted into the partisan army for close to 2 years. Upon returning from the army, he met his young and lovely bride Laura, and began to work as a furniture maker. In 1957, he decided to take his young family to Italy where he waited for the immigration papers to Canada where he hoping to join his brother John. His time in Italy was spent in a refugee camp until he received the good news of leaving for Canada in 1959. His first stop in St Catharines demonstrated his strong will and work ethic to succeed in this new and difficult journey, and a year later he moved his family to Toronto where he pursued his carpentry career, partnered in a real estate business, and with time he accepted a supervisory position at Toronto General Hospital in the carpentry unit.
Vinko enjoyed fishing with his buddies, playing cards and bocce with friends at the community centre, and lots of reading. One of his favourite pastimes was watching the House of Commons debates.
He loved our family gatherings, no matter what the occasion. He will be greatly missed by all of us and will be in our hearts forever.
