Vera Ethel Snyder (nee Orchard) came to Canada from Plymouth, England after WWII to build a life with the man of her dreams, William (Bill) Snyder. They met while he was stationed as a Quartermaster with the Canadian Fire Fighters in Plymouth. Vera crossed the Atlantic on a converted Lancaster Bomber and landed in Weston, Toronto.
She was an experienced Telephone Operator during the war and then worked in the same role for Bell Canada. After, she worked in Customer Service for the T. Eaton Company at the Downsview warehouse. She then stayed home to raise her three children, Kathryn, Deborah, and Michael. When they grew up, she worked at a pharmacy and helped establish the York Region branch of Meals on Wheels and worked there until she retired to look after Bill.
Vera was a longtime choir member and member of The Woman's Association at Westminster United Church. Bill was an Elder and he built a new chapel. Vera was also passionate about quilting and made beautiful quilts, which her grandkids loved to cuddle while tracing the stitches with their fingers. She loved her grandchildren with all her heart and encouraged them to celebrate their unique qualities. She also loved to travel and visit her family in England.
Vera lived a life full of love, laughter, and happiness. She leaves behind her daughter, Deborah Pomper (Eugene), and son, Michael (Xiao Lan); her grandchildren Christopher, Lauren, James (Carrie), Sarah (Michael), Adam (Jocelyn), Julia (Oliver); Jessica, Nicole, and mom, Debbie. She will also be missed by great-grandchildren Isabella, Greydon, and mom, Jennifer; and Dorian and Eszter. Vera was predeceased by her husband, Bill, and most recently, her daughter, Kathryn Herschel (Stan Cox).
