DAD
THOMAS (TOM) JONES
MARCH 23, 1926 - JUNE 11, 2022
It is with great heartbreak we announce the passing of Tom Jones on June 11, 2022, at the Sunnybrook Veterans’ Centre.
Tom was born to May and Thomas Henry Jones. He was the youngest of three, sisters Edna and Lil (predeceased) but is survived by his nephew Bill and niece Nancy. Sadly, he lost his father at age 10. This tragedy did not dampen his independence and quiet confidence. He learned to drive a Model A Ford at age 15 and began an apprenticeship as a Photoengraver. He lied about his age to join the Navy during WW II. He served aboard the HMCS Ottawa and after the war was assigned to clear the English Channel aboard the minesweeper HMCS Minas.
Upon returning to Canada after WWII, he resumed his apprenticeship as a Photoengraver and continued in the profession until his retirement at the age of 65. Tom married Audrey Watson (deceased) in 1951. Tom Jr. was born shortly thereafter in 1954. Daughter Michele was born in 1967. Tom is survived by Michele (Nick) and his loving granddaughters Caroline and Julia. He is also survived by brother-in-law Fred Watson (Diane).
Tom’s love of the cottage in the Kawartha’s he and Audrey purchased in 1966 continued throughout his life and became the hub of family events, gatherings, and milestones throughout the years.
Tom will be fondly remembered for his calm demeanour, good sense of humour, and gentle soul that everyone loved. He will be especially missed by Michele as a wonderful father who introduced her to classic Westerns, Charlie Chan detective movies, Old Time Radio, and Johnny Cash for the past several years and the time spent having coffee time along with the double chocolate glazed donut they shared at Sunny’s Cafeteria in the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre.
Our family would like to take this opportunity to thank the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, Lower Ground Southwest (LGSW) unit, for all the care, dedication, and attention he received over the last 7 years. To all the nursing, recreational, physiotherapy and medical staff that helped keep him strong and independent as long as he could, thank you! Not only did he become a part of your family, but we have felt the same about everyone at LGSW. We’d also like to thank Veterans Affairs Canada for their support and assistance. Mount Dennis Royal Canadian Legion Branch 31 – Weston, Ontario, Tom’s home branch, thank you for your support and assistance. All the help has not gone unnoticed and is truly appreciated. Lest We Forget!
