Honorary Colonel (Ret’d) The Lorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton) Regiment

It is with profound sadness but peaceful hearts that Tom’s family announces his passing on Thursday, July 18, 2013 after a bravely fought battle with cancer.

Survived by his wife of 41 years, Jacqulyn, their children Mary-Kathleen and Patrick (Tomoko), granddaughter Erika and soon to be born, grandson Thomas, brother, Fr. Gerald Dunn and sister Patricia. Predeceased by parents John and Gertrude Dunn, sister MaryEllen and brother John.

Educated at University of Windsor where he obtained an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Economics.

Attended University of Toronto Law School obtained law degree D. Juris and called to the Bar 1968.
Tom practiced law in Brampton 1968 – 1991, appointed Queen’s Council 1982. He acted as a Part Time Deputy Small Claims Court Judge for 17 years, also was appointed as a part time Assistant Crown Attorney.

He was actively involved in numerous community organizations, serving on the Boards of the YMCA and Peel Cheshire Homes. Tom coached and managed numerous teams of the Brampton Minor Hockey Association and Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association. He also was a leader in the Boy Scouts Organization.

Appointed to the Superior Court in March 1991, Central West District, he served primarily in Brampton and travelled to Milton, Orangeville, Guelph, Walkerton and Owen Sound. As a Justice he heard all types of cases in the jurisdiction of the Superior Court, which included in part, family matters and criminal jury trials.

He was appointed and proudly served as Honorary Lt Colonel and Honorary Colonel of the Lorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton) Regiment from 1993 to 2002. As Honorary, he enjoyed the opportunity of meeting with soldiers of the unit, participating in their training. He travelled to Bosnia to meet unit soldiers posted there. He maintained his great pride and interest in the unit to the end.

Our deepest thanks to the Nurses, Doctors and Staff of Ward 6A, Megan, Physio and Katy, OC Toronto General Hospital for the true kindness and deep compassion with which they cared for Tom and supported the family. A special thanks to Dr. Alex McCallion, Tom’s family doctor and good friend. There are Angels on this earth!

Tom was a man of many parts, an artist, competitive shooter, teacher, mentor, family historian, proud Lorne Scot, pickle master, single malt aficionado, dance instructor, lover of all things Irish and scallywag from a young age, a true and faithful friend, husband and father. He will be sorely missed but he leaves us with wonderful stories to tell of our adventures with him. Our Wild Colonial Boy!

The family will receive friends at the Ward Funeral Home 52 Main Street South (Hwy10) on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 from 12 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Jerome’s R.C. Church, 8530 Chinguacousy Road Brampton on Thursday, August 1 at l:30 p.m. Reception following at Brampton Armories 2 Chapel Street Brampton. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Brothers of the Good Shepherd or the The Lorne Scots Regimental Trust.
