On Thursday, June 13, 1946 a glorious person was born. The daughter of Juan and Nativided Lurca, the life partner of Trinidad Chamale, and loving mother - the beautiful Telma Antonia Lurca.
When Mama was nine, she lost her mother and became a mother all on the same day. She had to move from her childhood home in El Gallo, Zona 3 to her grandfather’s house in Zona 8. Mama Telma moving to Zona 8 was not random. God put mama there for a reason, and that reason was a block away. At sixteen, Mama met the handsome Trinidad. At that moment she didn’t know it yet, but she was looking at her future husband and future father of her children. They started dating for 3 years and then got married when she was twenty-one years old. Telma and Trinidad created 7 beautiful children - Hector, Oscar, Bryon, Ruth, Iris, Veronica, and William. Trinidad moved to Canada to give his wife and children a better life. Unfortunately, Telma and the children could not go with him, but that didn’t break her spirit. For five years mama fought hard to take care of her children and giving them the best life she could give them.
In August 1987, Telma and Trinidad reunited in Toronto, Canada. Coming to Canada changed her life. Mama could now do things she thought she could never do, like traveling. She traveled to Florida with her family and visited Disney World. She went to Barcelona and saw Messi play. She went to New York and saw the Statue Of Liberty. As time passed, her family grew bigger. She had 13 grandchildren who she loved and cared for like they were her own. She dedicated her life to teaching and loving her grandchildren. She would spoil them with attention and a lot of food. She enjoyed going to their soccer games and watching them play. You would see her with a smile on her face when she is in the presence of her family. When they would walk through her door, she would greet them with a big smile. She would ask if they ate already and if not, she would gladly serve them food. Everyone knew Mama Telma as an amazing cook. Her family and clients love her food, her specialty is Guatemalan cuisine. Every year for Christmas she would cook a huge batch of tamales. She would have a long list of clients eagerly ordering her delicious tamales. Like many of her dishes, they would sell out quickly. Mama was the embodiment of love and knowledge. She was a mother figure to everyone in her life, no one was an exception to receive her love. Not even William’s Husky Shadow. Even though she was clear, she didn’t want any pets; but she ended up falling in love with Shadow. As they said in their vows until death do us apart. Telma and Trinidad shared their lives together for years until she passed away from the aftermath of having Covid-19.
When we look back to the past, we realize everything happens for a reason. Although the door of her life closed too soon, another door opened. Her death wasn’t in vain, she brought her family closer together. Mama Telma was and will always be the backbone of this family.
