Sophie Karavelis

Sophie (Hassos) Karavelis, passed away peacefully on October 20th, 2024, at the age 91. Born in Pisoderi, Greece, on July 29th 1933, Sophie is the daughter of Angelo and Anastasia (Gardanis) Hassos. She immigrated to Canada at the age of 16 where she met her husband Athanasios “Thomas” Karavelis. Together they started a family and owned and operated Tom’s Fur Shop in the Junction area of Toronto. An avid gardener and cook, she loved long walks with her friends, spending time with her grandchildren, and attending family gatherings.

Sophie was predeceased by her husband Athanasios “Thomas” Karavelis, and her brothers, Michael, James, and Olympios Hassos. She is survived by her three devoted sons George (Andreanne), Michael (Lily), and Gregory (Julie); five grandchildren Thomas (Antonia), Matthew, Sarah, Sofia, and Simon; and great grandson Alex. She will also lovingly be remembered by her sisters-in-law Mina and Georgia, nieces, nephews, extended family in Greece and Rochester, and numerous friends. She will be dearly missed by all.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday October 23rd, 2024, from 4pm-8pm at Ward Funeral Home- Weston Chapel. The funeral will be held on Thursday October 24th, 2024, at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 10am-11am, followed by the interment at Park Lawn Cemetery, and a memorial luncheon at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
