Sister Margaret Laffey

Sister Margaret Anne Laffey, an Apostolic Sister of the Good Shepherd of Toronto, Ontario, in her 70th year and her 21st year of religious profession peacefully passed away on August 16, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Convent in Toronto. Margaret was the only child yet her relationship with her best friend Mary Killackey was that of sisters. Mary and Margaret spend 48 years supporting each other through education, health issues, marriages, births and deaths. Margaret is aunt to Mary’s sons Sean and Kevin (Kelly) and great aunt to Kayleigh. She was predeceased by her parents Anne (McMurray) and Thomas Laffey. She is survived by her aunt Mary Laffey, her cousins, Patrick (Carrie), Nick (Linda) Tina, Eileen, Brian (Bev), Carmel (Dan) Connelly and their families, as well as her special friends Sr. Anne Schenck, CSJ , Dr. Stanley Jonathan, Colleen Ogilvie and the McLoughlin and Oldman families.
Sr. Margaret entered Religious life rather late, after years in Public Service. As a Sister of the Good Shepherd, she continued her work in Social service and Justice and Peace cause. She was Executive Director of Rose of Sharon Services for young mothers and Rosalie Hall. For six years she was missioned to Vancouver, working in Pastoral Care and prison ministry. Margaret also worked in Winnipeg for three years with Youth at Risk. During her ministry in these communities Margaret made lifelong friendships that continues until her death. Returning to Toronto in 2008 due to health issues, Margaret continued her work with the Good Shepherd sisters as a Communication Coordinator. As always Margaret was able to bring out the best in those whose life she touched both personally and professionally. Margaret's vivacious sense of humour, her gentle soul and big hugs are legendary and will always be remembered. She never missed an opportunity to tell those in her life, how special they were to her. Margaret was a rare and special gift from God for so many of us and will be greatly missed. Now she has gone Home for her much deserved reward. Dear Margaret will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Visitation will take place at Ward Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Rd, Toronto on Monday August 19, from 2-4 and 7-9pm. The Mass of the Resurrection on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 11am at 25 Good Shepherd Ct. Internment at Mt. Hope Cemetery following reception. . In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Rose of Sharon Services, Rosalie Hall or Pelletier Youth in Transition.
