Shirley Dorothy (nee Young) Jarvis, 87, passed away peacefully on February 1st, at her home in Oakville, the only child of her parents Harold and Dorothy Young. Shirley is survived by her three children: Catherine Stewart Jarvis (Peter D.H.) Bath, David Young (Patricia Helen Bourne) Jarvis, William Hood (Joy Stambaugh Greene) Jarvis; four granddaughters: Sarah Grace (Jason) Rhodes, Martha Stewart Bath, Gillian Dorothy Bath, Jocelyn Ward Jarvis and a grandson: Peter Young Jarvis and one great grandson: Noah William Rhodes; of all she was very proud. Her husband of 60 years, Jeffrey Stewart Jarvis preceded her in death, December 1st, 2010.
Shirley was born in Toronto and is a graduate of Branksome Hall and the University of Toronto, class of 1948, Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity. Shirley served in the Royal Canadian Navy and was stationed in Halifax during the war as a WREN.
Shirley was a stay-at-home mother when her children were growing up, but was very active with the Junior League and University Women's Club with whom she did many years of volunteer work. As her youngest child entered high school, Shirley went to work as a social worker for the Family Services Association for the City of Hamilton until she retired in 1987. Shirley and Jeff were avid Hamilton Tiger Cat fans, and would attend every home game as season ticket-holders for many years. Post retirement, Shirley became very involved with the Oakville Senior Citizens' Recreation Centre as well as serving as a lay Chalice Bearer at St. Jude's Anglican Church, Oakville. Her lifelong hobbies include knitting, which she continued to do by knitting baby blankets for her church, St. Jude's. Shirley loved to swim and exercise with tai chi. She was also proficient at sewing, smocking and calligraphy, was an excellent cook and hostess and loved a good rubber of bridge with her Churchill Place friends.

Shirley will be missed by her family and friends.

Visitation will be held at the Ward Funeral Home, “Oakville Chapel”, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Jude's Anglican Church, 160 Williams Street, Oakville on Friday, February 8th at 11 am, reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
