LOCKER, Sheila
Sheila was born in Newry, County Down, Ireland on January 4 1940 to Mary Catherine (nee Mckeown) and Peter McCartney. She was the 5th of six children and was blessed with a very happy childhood. She attended St Clare’s Convent School and worked at Taylor’s in Newry as a seamstress before emigrating to Toronto in August 1966.
She met her husband Jim on Friday January 13, 1967 and they were married at The Holy Rosary Church, St Clair Avenue West, Toronto on October 19 1968. She continued to work at Northern Telecom in the Finch /Highway 400 area until the birth of her first daughter Kim in 1972 when she “retired,” to become a fulltime mother and homemaker. Two more children followed: James in 1973 and Kara in 1980.
When her children reached their teens, Sheila decided to spread her wings and work within her community in Brampton. First with many other parishioners of St Leonard’s, helping Father Callaghan raise funds for the building of their new church. Afterwards, with her friends Marg Saniga and Loraine Beamish working bingos to raise funds for: St Elias Ukrainian Catholic Church, refurbishing the chapel within Notre Dame High School and Champion Boxing Club for under privileged youth. She loved working for the community which provided her with the opportunity to express her generosity of spirit and her undoubted Irish charm!
Sheila decided to “retire,” for a second time with the births of her two beloved granddaughters. Keira and Addison.
Sheila bore malice to none, she was a wonderful friend to many and above all, unconditionally loved her family with all her heart. Sadly, Sheila passed away in Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga on August 23 2022.
She will be sorely missed, but her memory will remain with us forever.
