Samuel Macdonald Lashley
Born on September 2, 1922 My Lord’s Hill in the Parish of St. Michael, Barbados to Rosalie Louise (née Davis) and Edmund Mortimer Lashley. He was the youngest of six children. Predeceased by Ithran, Olive, Fielding, Ruth and Edmund. Sam loved his family and the rich history of his country and Christian upbringing.
Sam married his loving, gentle wife Enid (née Linton) in January 1961 after praying for God to show him whom he should marry. They were married at White Park Pilgrim Holiness Church, St. Michael’s. They emigrated to Canada in 1969. Sam’s commitment and love for his “Nid” was demonstrated as he cared for her during her illness from 1998. His daily visits to the hospital, spending time holding and assisting with her care until her death in 2000.
Sam and Enid were blessed to have two daughters. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters Rosalind and Yvette, his son-in-law Michael and grandchildren Monique and Jordan. He will be missed by his nieces Anita (Bruce) Clarke and Jennifer Cross, nephew David (Nicole) Heeralal and great nephews Jamal and Brennon (Natasha) Reeves and their families, great nieces Liz and Antoinette, the Clarke and Ifil family as well as close family friends Yvonne Forde, Myrtle Savoury and many others whose lives were impacted by him.
Sam was a dedicated and hard working employee who was an asset to any team and project he was involved with. He was especially proud of his work with the Costain group and his work building the Deep Water Harbour in Barbados. He was employed for 18 years at Sunnybrook Hospital before retiring in 1987.
He lived a life of service to his family, friends, his church and his community. He truly believed in “who is your neighbour” and would help anyone whether it was giving someone a drive or sharing the fruits of his labour from his garden. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, attending funerals, studying his bible and listening to various preachers. He was a wonderful storyteller who made Sunday dinners and gatherings fun and an opportunity to learn about the past. His year would not be complete if he did not attend the CNE to watch the air show.
Most importantly, Sam served the Lord for over 79 years and loved sharing the Word with those around him. Even during his last months of life he would ask each caregiver if they attended church and share his faith with them. He actively participated in church life at each church he attended during his life (White Park Holiness, Oakwood Wesleyan, New Life Christian Assembly and Malton Bible Chapel.) He was a choir member, lay preacher, Sunday School teacher and served as an Elder. He wanted non-christians who were watching to see Christ through his life. He lived quietly, loved well and served his Lord until he went peacefully to meet his Saviour on May 3, 2023. He will be missed for his unshakeable faith, his commitment and for living a life of integrity despite facing many challenges in his life.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
