On December 4, 2018 Ruth Elizabeth Grills (née Beck) of Brampton, Ontario passed away after a long battle with health issues.
Born on January 9, 1943 in St. Lawrence Newfoundland to Thomas and Isabelle Beck, Ruth Elizabeth was one of eight children. Her siblings Bertha, Catherine, Lloyd, Lou, and Harris have since deceased while she is survived by brothers Wilson and Ralph.
Ruth survived tuberculosis in her early teens and spent around a year in hospital. She left home at 15 and began work as a cook’s helper in an orphanage in St. John’s. She later worked in hospitality in the Governor’s house, and in hotels in New Brunswick and Malton. It was while living in Malton that she met her future husband, Bryan Douglas Grills. They were married June 4, 1966. In October of 1968 their daughter Colleen Isabelle was born. Five years later, with the adoption of their son Steven Thomas Rae, their family was complete.
Ruth spent her children’s early years at home and returned to work later in life, working for seventeen years at Tilwood Distributing.
Over the years Ruth and Bryan welcomed several grand children and step-grand children into their lives; Tatiana and Brenden, children of Steven Grills and Ursula DeLorme; Sarah, Grace and Thomas, children of Colleen Grills and Michael Slater; and Maeve and Logan, children of Steven Grills and Cynthia Donaldson.
She is survived by her devoted and loving husband Bryan Douglas Grills.
