Russel E. Prouse, QC (1923-2021)
The family of Russel Ewart Prouse sadly announces his passing on May 9, 2021. Predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, Lillian (Davis), in 2017. Fondly remembered by his children Rick (Sue), Janet (Bob), Patti (Lyle), and Roger (Sheila). He was a much-loved grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Russ was born in 1923 on the farm in Claremont to the late Arthur and Sarah (Routley) Prouse. He is predeceased by 11 siblings and is survived only by his sister Gladys of Georgetown. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, patrolling the St. Lawrence. After his discharge he took up studies at Victoria College, University of Toronto. Upon graduating with a BA, he entered and graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School with an LLB. He practised law for the next 50 years in Brampton, retiring at 75. He was well known as a volunteer, taking leadership roles in the local Kinsman Club, St. Paul's Church, Probus, minor hockey and lacrosse, as well as Director of the Junior Hockey team in its early days. He was an avid bridge player, crossword puzzle enthusiast, ukulele plucker, golfer, and curler. He served for many years as Brampton Curling Club Director and President as well as the Peel County Council, Brampton Town Council, and was Mayor of Brampton from 1963-66. After municipal politics, he remained an active member of the Liberal Party of Canada. Many appreciated his ability for public speaking, rarely speaking with notes and always bringing down the house with the 'slippers under the bed' poem when he attended many family weddings. However, his most enjoyable pleasure was his family time at McRae Beach on Lake Simcoe. A private family service will be held in the chapel of the Ward Funeral Home, 52 Main Street South Brampton, on Wednesday May 19, 2021 at 11am.
