Rosa Arlotto

Born in Marsico Nuovo, Potenza, Italy, on July 24th, 1956, Rosa immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1967. Mother to Daphne (Jamie), grandmother to Julian and Wilder, sister to Gino (Flavia) and Joe (Nadia), aunt to Luana (Marcos), Stefania (Nik), Michele, David, Mark, and Melissa (Luigi), great aunt to Maxim, Julius, Kolby, Milo, and devoted cousin and friend to many.

As a University of Toronto graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (English, French, and Italian), Rosa had a love of the arts, with a calling and gift of writing poetry, and in more recent years, short stories. She published her first book of poetry, Record of a Modern Heart in 2005. Her writing contributions continued with additional works in poetry and a short story publication. A fierce advocate for human rights, which came through in her poetry, Rosa was a valued member of her communities, such as Art Bar Poetry Series in Toronto.

Rosa is remembered for her stoic nature and rare, but bright smile. She was quietly loving but always present for friends and family. An observer whose soft wisdom was always appreciated and will be forever cherished. Travel highlighted her life, with her last trip being to Italy where she was able to visit her hometown and relive (specifically) the hills and other memories from childhood. Stubborn to a fault, Rosa marched to the beat of her own drum for as long as anyone can remember– one of many qualities that will be dearly missed.

From the moment

between the lethal power of living

and stanched apprehension

of inevitable death

I want enough passion

before the parting

to rise from history

tall as myth.
