He attended Battswood Primary School, Livingstone High School and Hewitt Training College, where he studied to become a teacher.

Robert continued his teaching career with the Etobicoke Board of Education, later the Toronto District School Board. He took courses and upgraded his qualifications and became a principal. He took time off to care for Beatrice as she battled cancer and he retired in 2003.
Robert enjoyed travelling and meeting new people and took many vacations after he retired. He went to South Africa, Australia, Dominican Republic, Barbados, Mexico, Hawaii, St. Lucia, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Scotland and many Canadian and American cities.
He enjoyed playing cricket, soccer, rugby and tennis in his youth and watching many different sports in his later years. Robert loved music, cooking, being in nature, and spending time with family and friends.
