Richard “Dick” Downey was born on February 22, 1936 to William and Irene Downey. Dick leaves behind his beautiful wife of 63 years, Marjorie, his 6 children Bruce, Linda (Doug), Robert (Carol) , Sandra (Kamran), Donna and Karen (Roger); as well as 12 grandchildren (Ryan, Meagan, Mackenzie, Jessica, Trevor, Elliott, Chance, Aidan, Jake, Troy, Sean, Ryder) and 8 great grandchildren. Dick lived his entire 87 years in Toronto. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1959 with a degree in Commerce then went on to be a Chartered Accountant.
A true sports lover, Dick taught all his children to ski, swim, skate, play soccer, ringette and hockey to name a few. For decades, he was a season ticket holder for his beloved Blue Jays and tortured Toronto Maple Leafs. He attended his last Blue Jay game on April 26th. He was excited for the upcoming season.
Dick was also a lover of Dixieland Jazz, hence his nickname Dynamite Dapper Disco Dick! For years, he spent his Saturday afternoons at the Chick 'n' Deli watching his friends play in the Climax Jazz band and dancing it up.
Dick was also an avid golfer. He was a member of the Weston Golf and Country Club for 32 years from 1980 to 2012. In 1999 he was so proud to be named club president. He made some great friendships at Weston and continued to play golf up until last year.
Dick and Marj were known to host the best Grey Cup parties. If you ever attended one you probably don’t remember much. The party always ended with Dick’s best friends, John Halligan and Gene Scanlon, having "just one more beer". On May 25th, the party upstairs got a little louder... actually a lot louder, reuniting these three guys together again.
