PIERINA MARIA PETTI
November 22, 1936, to February 27, 2016
God called Pierina Maria (Leonzio) Petti home suddenly on February 27, 2016, at the age of 79. She will be reunited in Heaven with her beloved late husband Costanzo (1986).
A devoted mother to her children, Antonietta (Tony), Letizia (Marc), Susana, Frank (Joyce) and Giuseppina, she was also a proud nonna who adored her grandchildren, Katie, Aimee, Jordana, JonMarc, Michael and Alessandro; each brought her tremendous joy.
She will be missed by her family in Italy, including her beloved youngest brother, Salvatore (Maria) and nephews Luca and Simone, the Di Maria and Lalumière families in Montreal, and her many, many steadfast friends and vicini di casa (neighbours).
Daughter of the late Giuseppe Leonzio and the late Letizia Gioia, she was a sister to the late Franco, Adelaide, Antonietta, Paolo and the late Graziella.
Born in Larino, in the region of Molise, she arrived in Canada in 1957 with only a six-month visa. A chance meeting after Mass at St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church in Toronto’s Little Italy neighbourhood led to her happy marriage in 1958 to the late Costanzo, who was born in the neighbouring Italian hilltop town of Montorio nei Frentani.
Hers was a home filled with laughter and music, especially opera, and with a kitchen that was always “open” to friends and family; her holiday meals were legendary. Although she went to school only until grade three — typical for most girls in rural Italy — she had a curious mind, and was a wise teacher who, when asked, gladly shared her life experiences with others. She was especially proud of her volunteer role as a Block Parent to neighbourhood children. For all this and more she is deeply loved, and will be missed.
The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate and knowledgeable care of family physician Dr. Robert Urback and oncologist Dr. Sam Berger, and the kindness of their office teams, as well as her caregivers over the years (Dopson, Nkasi Ibe, Ofori).
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in her memory to the Department of Oncology at Humber River Hospital Foundation (Dr. Sam Berger), www.hrhfoundation.ca.
