PHILIP RAND THOMPSON (1929-2025)

Philip passed away peacefully on January 3rd, 2025 at Faith Manor Holland Christian Homes (HCH) in Brampton. Having lost his wife Barbara in 2021, they are now happily reunited. Philip touched so many lives in his long and active life and will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, strong and lasting friendships, commitment to community service and enjoyment of the company of others.

He will be missed by his sons Rand (Angela), Scott, Dean (predeceased), Craig (Allan) and Derek (Wendy), his granddaughter Ryan, and the many nieces, nephews and cousins of his large extended family. Philip will also be missed by the kind and loving staff at HCH, his essential caregiver Linda and his many friends and colleagues.

Philip was born and raised in Woodbridge Ontario. After graduating with honours from Weston Collegiate and Vocational School in 1947, Philip entered the Applied Science and Engineering (Civil) program at the University of Toronto. He spent his first two years studying at the Ajax campus which was setup to accommodate veterans returning from the war before moving to the downtown Toronto campus. Philip graduated in 1952 and after participating in the uniquely Canadian tradition of the Calling of an Engineer ceremony, received his iron ring which he wore with enormous pride to his last day.

After graduating, Philip joined the federal Department of Transport and started working at the North Bay Airport. In 1953 Philip married the love of his life Barbara Evelyn Coon at the Woodbridge United Church before returning to North Bay as a couple where four of his five sons were born. In 1965 Philip moved his family to Brampton where is fifth son was born and became very active with Christ Church Brampton, Boy Scouts of Canada, Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, municipal politics, Probus Mens Club of Brampton and other community organizations.

Philip retired from the public service in 1989 after 37 years practising as a Professional Engineer (P.ENG.) and remained active in the Brampton community. Throughout his life, Philip developed many strong and enduring professional relationships and personal friendships with people from all walks of life. He was a prolific writer and his journals capture many important moments in his life, and the life of his family and his community. He was also a lover of theatre, fan of Cher and someone who didn’t miss a chance to use parody and humour to take the edge off a serious moment or make a point.

A celebration of Philip’s life will be held at Christ Church, 4 Elizabeth St. N., Brampton, Ontario, on Friday January 10th at 11 a.m. There will be an after service social. For the convenience of those out-of-town, the service will be streamed online. Please see the church’s or Ward Funeral Home’s website for more details. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Christ Church Brampton, Progress Place Toronto, Schizophrenia Society of Ontario or Alzheimer Society of Ontario.
