Nicola Mammone

October 26, 1924 — April 7, 2020

Nicola Mammone

Nicola died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday April 7, 2020, aged 95. After a full and rewarding life, he has moved on to be with his wife Antonietta who passed two years ago after 64 wonderful years of married life together. He is also pre-deceased by all his siblings, Domenico, Francesca and Vincenza.

He is survived by his daughter Mary and his son Peter and their spouses Tony and Janet. He had four grandchildren Cassandra, who married Greg, Alena, Jonathan, who married Olya, and Jessica. He was also doubly blessed to have two great grandchildren, Cassandra and Greg’s daughters Isabella and Amelia.

Nicola lived quite an eventful life, born in 1924 before the Great Depression and before World War 2, in Sora, a small town an hour out of Rome. Born into a poor farming family he only attended school until grade 5 before staying home to help with the farm. The depression and the war meant that survival for Nick and his family was very tough. So tough that at age 27 in 1951 he made the decision to immigrate to Canada.

He worked briefly for a road construction company before moving on to work for the railway at Union Station where he stayed until he retired in his early 60’s. He and his wife Antonietta both worked hard to raise a family and give their children an opportunity to get a good education. Both their children completed their university education as well as post-graduate work, which was a great source of pride for Nick.

In retirement Nick was able to travel, especially in the winters when he and his wife enjoyed many month-long vacations in Acapulco, where they swam and played cards and enjoyed wonderfully relaxing times.

As they aged, they sold their home and moved in with their daughter and son-in-law, and enjoyed a very close family setting as a treasured part of the extended family. The family kept them close and well and helped them stay strong for so long.

But time marches on and even with Nick’s strong constitution and fierce sense of pride in his independence, his age finally caught up to him. Thankfully he passed quietly in his sleep, in the peace of his faith, with no pain at all.

He has become such a part of our lives that we’ll miss him every day.
