Died peacefully at home, after a brief battle with lung cancer, on March 10, 2011. Nick lived life to the fullest and will be remembered for his infectious smile, his enthusiasm for fun, his relentless support of family and friends, and as a generous husband and father. Nick was always there and will remain a strong presence in everyone’s lives. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Johanna “Jenny” nee Depondt, his children Cythnia Korpan (Doug Jarvis), Lynn Patterson (Scott), and Karen McCluskey (Stuart) as well as his beloved grandchildren Caroline, Tom, Beti, Will, Samantha, Sydney and Spencer. He leaves behind his siblings William and Joseph Korpan, Rosemary Ternoey and Kathy Smyth as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother James.
Nick grew up in Chatham, Ontario and carried on the family tradition of farming in his early working years. In 1968 he embarked on an entrepreneurial endeavour and opened Countryside Furniture which provided him with a rewarding career for the next 20 years and allowed him to use his sales skills and business acumen.
He retired at age 55 and began to spend time on his many other passions including woodworking, golf, tennis, travel and being with his grandchildren. Immediate family members have been recipients of at least one of Nick’s finely crafted pieces of furniture; each piece as strong and stoic as the craftsman himself. Friends enjoyed many games of tennis, golf and bridge with Nick and remember fondly the humor and fun that he would always bring to the games. Together, Nick and Jenny enjoyed many excursions around the world, right up until late 2010, with Nick always ready to add another rich experience to his life. And lastly, Nick was an outstanding grandfather to his 7 grandchildren. Each of them spent many hours with Grandpa playing chess, enjoying his hand-built swings and beautifully crafted wood horses, and learning about one of his other passions – trees. Nick, your family and friends will be forever grateful for the joy and love you so selflessly shared with all of us.
Family and Friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home “Oakville Chapel”, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville on Sunday, March 13, 2011 from 7-9pm.
