MURIAL BRAHAM-WELLS
(nee Mallory)
After a life of adventure, chronicled in her self-published “Memoirs of an Enchanted Vagabond”, Murial passed away peacefully on Sunday September 1, 2013 in her 99th year. Predeceased by her husband Stanley Wilfred Wells (1982) and her second husband Richmond Braham (1984), Murial will be remembered with love and admiration by her three sons and their wives, Gordon and Elaine, David and Lois, and Ross and Judy, her sister Barbie (Ted), her grandchildren Kim (Brian), Lisa (Jeff), Rebecca, Christopher (Chelsea), Jenna Mallory (Ehren) and Katie (Chris), as she will by her 7 great grand children, and nephews and nieces in British Columbia. Murial was born in Victoria BC, coming east after high school, and finding work at the Canadian Bank of Commerce where she met Stanley. They married in 1941. Murial was busy raising her boys through the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. For many years she served as Wardens’ Secretary and Choir Mother at Grace Church-on-the-Hill in Toronto. In 1973 she struck out on a dream, finding Arthur Jaillet in Bouctouche, New Brunswick who built her a 26 foot boat which she captained up and down the St. Lawrence Seaway twice. In 1988 she was elected as a Councilor in Haldimand Township and served nine years. As Township Councilor, Murial will be remembered for initiating the Canada Day parade in Grafton, a recycling program promoted as “Ladies Day at the Dump” and the naming of the township roads recognizing many veterans from the area. In recognition of her community service, she was awarded both the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals. In 1988, she was elected President of the Society of Ontario Nut Growers, serving a three year term. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Murial’s legacy, the Lone Pine Marsh Sanctuary (www.lonepinemarsh.ca) which Murial conceived of, initiated and for many years sustained by selling jars of homemade jam. It will be a home to wildlife in her memory for generations to come. And to that she would surely say “hot diggity!”. A service of celebration will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, Grafton, Ontario on Saturday, September 28th at 2:00PM. Murial’s family wish to thank Dr. Vaithlingham and the staff at Humber Heights for their care and compassion in her final days.
