Mirela Todorovic

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Mirela Todorovic on February 22, 2025. She was predeceased by her parents Mirko and Nevenka Todorovic in 2017 and 2021 respectively. Mirela is survived by her fiancé, Robert (Rob) McKenna, her many aunts, uncles & cousins in Canada, Bosnia, Germany and Serbia as well as her many, many dear friends.

Mirela was born on March 26, 1987 in Banja Luka, Bosnia. The family emigrated to Canada in 1991. Mirela was extremely close with her parents, Mirko and Nelly, who made sure that Mirela had the best care, support, treatment, opportunities and education to shape her into the compassionate and capable woman we all know. Mirela was born with cerebral palsy and she used her experiences as a woman with a disability to fuel her creativity.

After graduating in 2007 from Martingrove Collegiate Institute High School, Mirela went on to achieve diplomas in General Arts & Science and Media Communications from Humber College. Mirela thrived in academia winning multiple achievement awards for her studies at Humber College. Always striving to learn more, Mirela went on to complete a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Media Studies through the University of Guelph. She was awarded the Penguin Random House Canada Emerging Writers Scholarship in 2024 and used it to apply to grad school at the University of Glostercesterchire where she was completing a Master program in Creative Writing. Mirela was an established scholar and published author with dreams of having a long-term career as a writer. She published her first book of short stories and poems in 2014 entitled, “There’s Tofu in This”.

Outside of school, Mirela enjoyed spending time with friends and family, writing, creating art, watching a good T.V. series, and listening to music. Mirela's family included her cats Mirko and Cappy, and dogs Zooey and Franny who she adored.

Mirela will be fondly remembered for her sharp wit, her strong voice, and her artistic passions.
