Michal (Mike) Pelikan passed away peacefully on January 29th. at Sunnybrook Veterans building in Toronto. He was the son of Josef Pelikan and Marketa (Menger), brother to Pavel & Helena, loving father to son Michael and daughter Michelle, grandfather to Gabriela, brother-in-law to Merline and Jose, uncle to Steve, Jeremy, Timmy, Lindsay, Jordan, William and a great uncle to Michael, Aries, Lukas and Nikolas. Born in Prague, Czech Republic, being the middle child, he always tried to keep up with his older brother and was a protector to his younger sister. He studied technical school before moving with his family in December 1968 to Winnipeg Canada when he was 18 years old.
Canada provided many opportunities for Michal, one of them being a truck driver for Harkama Ltd. along his brother. He later became a driver for Canada Post. His love of adventure and travel took him many places. He drove across Canada and visited many tropical destinations such as Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica, and Florida. He especially loved scuba diving and snorkeling. Many of those trips were shared with his brother, including a family vacation with their mother and children to Walt Disney World in early 90’s.Many fond memories were made on this trip along with the many other family vacations and gatherings including the summer days spent with the whole family at his moms (grandmas) pool.Mike was known for his humour, and often called šašek (clown).
In 1987, he welcomed his first child,Michael, through his marriage to Darlene. In 1990, they welcomed their second child, Michelle. He loved his children and family very much, and his affection can still be found in old photographs and family videos. He will be greatly missed.
We would like to thank Sunnybrook Veterans hospital for their professionalism, great care and compassion for Mike, especially to Dr. Selby, during the length of Mike’s illness. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to foundation@sunnybrook.ca.
