A graduate of the Ontario College of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, Class of 53 she practiced for 47 years. She had a love of the arts; music, theatre, opera, dance and particularly the visual arts, being an accomplished painter herself.

She served as church warden and was a lay member of synod for many years. Mavis was very honoured to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for dedicated voluntary service.
