Matilde Genova (née DiCarlo) passed away May 12th, 2023, at 92 years old, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born October 25th, 1930, to Nicola and Teresa DiCarlo in Abruzzo, Italy.
Matilde emigrated to Canada in 1954 with her first husband, Anthony Gargarella (deceased). After Anthony’s passing, Matilde worked tirelessly to provide for her five children by utilizing her incredible skills as a women’s fashion designer and seamstress. She married her second husband, Vincent (Jimmy) Genova (deceased), in 1971, and together they enjoyed spending time with loved ones at the family cottage until his passing in 1996.
Forever the consummate hostess, Matilde was a gifted cook and baker whose meals were often surrounded by family and filled with love.
When she wasn’t enjoying time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Matilde pursued creative outlets such as knitting and crocheting.
She was a prize-winning gardener, having won such awards as the “Best Garden in Etobicoke” in two of the homes that she lived in during her lifetime.
A dedicated woman of faith, she is survived by her sons and their spouses, Rick and Kathy Gargarella (née McCarron) and Anthony and Candy Gargarella (née Donnelly); grandchildren Adrian and partner Sabrina, Matthew and partner Samantha, Eric and partner Allison, Elisa, and Nicole; great-grandchildren Johnathan, Aria, Ellie, Nina, and Tayla; stepchildren Virginia Alfino (née Gargarella), Judy Green (née Gargarella), and Raymond Gargarella (deceased).
Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home at 2035 Weston Road on Wednesday, May 17th, from 4-8 pm. A mass will be held on Thursday, May 18th, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. at All Saints Church (1415 Royal York Rd). Interment to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery (305 Erskine Ave).
