Mary N. Jennings (nee Kittson)
May 15, 1927 - March 7, 2016
After bravely fighting a brief illness Mary (Mum) has passed on to a peaceful place. Daughter of Norman Kittson and Muriel Kittson (nee Cartwright) of Hamilton, Ontario, she is survived by her husband of 63 years Walter Jennings, son Norman Jennings, daughter Nancy Jennings wife of Dennis Kelly, grandchildren Sarah Kelly and Brendan Kelly who knew her as Grannie, and sister Joan Scott (nee Kittson) wife of Ted Scott.
Mary Nancy Kittson was born in Toronto, Ontario where she attended Oriole Park Public School and later St. Clement’s School. She enrolled at Victoria College in the University of Toronto completing first year before transferring to McMaster University in Hamilton where she graduated with BA in Arts. She met and married Walter when they both worked at Clarkson Gordon in Hamilton, Ontario.
Once her children were in secondary school, Mary enrolled in the Library Techniques course at Sheridan College in Oakville graduating on the Dean’s Honour Roll. Mary worked in the libraries of General Wolfe Secondary School, Maple Grove Public School, W. J. Wood Secondary School and Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School until she retired. She cherished the relationships she developed with students over the years.
A long time resident of Oakville, Ontario, Mary was an active member at St. John’s United Church, the Oakville Historical Society, University Women’s Club, Ontario Association of Library Technicians and volunteered for many years at the Oakville Senior Citizens’ Recreation Centre.
Mary was a real outdoors person attending camp every summer of her youth, first at Cedar Nook Camp in Bath, Ontario and later Camp Onawa near Huntsville where she became a CIT and later a counselor. The family spent summers at Drag Lake Lodge.
Travelling extensively with the family or husband Walter, destinations she explored included both coasts of Canada, the USA, Jamaica, England, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Brazil and her most cherished trip Maui, Hawaii.
A Graveside Service for family members officiated by Reverend Sheila Murray of St. John’s United Church will he held on Saturday March 19, 2016 at 11:00 am at Trafalgar Lawn Cemetery, 1149 Dundas Street West, Oakville Ontario. A luncheon reception/Celebration of Life will be held afterwards for family and friends at Ward Funeral Home, Oakville Chapel - Reynolds Room, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville, Ontario starting at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers donations are encouraged to organizations Mary supported. Covenant House covenanthousetoronto.ca and with Mary being a breast cancer survivor the Canadian Cancer Society cancer.ca
