Mary Cline

Cline, Mary (nee Keyte)
(January 15, 1920- July 21, 2010)

With the passing of Mary Cline another amazing soul has left this earth. Born in Hamilton, Ontario to Harry and Elsie (Stockdale) Keyte, while traveling widely, she never really strayed far from home. She lived from 1954 to 2004 in Mississauga, and for these past six years at The Kensington in Oakville.

In 1937, Mary met the love of her life the late Bill (W.G)Cline. Born on the same hour of the same day, they knew that they were “meant for each other”. Oh how she and Bill loved to dance. From their marriage in 1941 to Bill’s death in 1989, they never looked back. She supported him in his career with Sun Oil Company, community leadership roles, sports, and coaching. He supported her in everything she chose to do, which for a ‘50’s woman with considerable energy and two children, meant as much volunteer work as humanly possible.

Despite all of these involvements, everyone close to Mary knew that her family was her number one priority. So in 1989 when her Bill died that April to be followed by the death of her beloved son (William) Scott Cline in November, they understood why her indomitable spirit was almost broken. Her stubbornness, strength, love for and support from family, friends, church and community kept her going and she still continued to contribute up until failing health meant she could no more.

The many honours awarded to Mary include: the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2003), the Governor General's Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation (1992), Mississauga Citizen of the Year (1987), and a Gold Caduceus, one of the highest honours from the Canadian Cancer Society.

Mary was proud to serve as Regent and Past Regent of the Port Credit chapter IODE, was founding president of the Clarkson branch of the Canadian Cancer Society, and on the boards of the Peel Region Housing Authority and The Mississauga Historic for Benares and Bradley House Museums.

She was a fundraiser extraordinaire for many charities, worthwhile causes and along with Bill, an active member of Christ United Church in (Clarkson) Mississauga. The Mississauga Progressive Conservative Association, Girl Guides of Canada, and The Royal Muskoka Island Association all benefited from her experience and energy. Mary also gained great satisfaction as a volunteer reading tutor for the Peel District School Board.

Mary will be missed by her beloved family: daughter Carol Ann Brayman (Dr. T. David Williams), adored grandsons John William Brayman (Jade Serran), Matthew Paul Brayman (Stephanie McLean), and baby great granddaughter Dyllan McLean Brayman who was born just in time for her 90th birthday.

Mary loved her siblings, the late Leonard Keyte (Margaret), the late Ruby (and Joe) McLaren, and her surviving sister Dorothy Dorman (Bruce). Bill’s late siblings Chuck (Bette) Cline, Jim (Mary) Cline, and Cliff Cline were mourned by her. She was grateful for the ongoing love and support of Stan (Kay) Cline, Bill’s sister Mary (Ron) Kemp and Cliff’s wife Margaret.

Aunty Mary will be mourned by numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly and in whose lives she took a great interest. She was so happy to have her step grandsons, David’s sons Frank and John Williams, to include in her brood.

To think of Mary is to think of action, passion, loyalty, determination, laughter, and love. She loved bridge, politics, music (playing the violin and singing), golf, tennis, all things British, and the Hamilton Tiger Cats! The last person standing of the old Hamilton gang, it’s to be hoped that she’s now joined them for a great party.

Mary’s family sends thanks to all of the social, support and medical staff that helped Mary during her final years.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, 1700 Mazo Crescent, Mississauga. Reception to follow.
