It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mark William Pengilly, affectionately known as “Seagully”, on Feb 4, 2024, in his 73rd year. Mark passed peacefully at Hospice Vaughan with family by his side. In memory of Mark, in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Operation Smile Canada, a charity close to his heart. We will miss Marks smile, humour, spontaneity, and storytelling.
Born in 1951, Mark grew up and went to school in Etobicoke. He enjoyed hockey at a young age but his true passion was music. He spent many hours practicing his acoustic guitar in his parents garage and writing music. He credits The Beatles with steering him to music, although his style was more folk rock. In early 1970’s, he purchased a large house in rural Rockwood, Ont. where he and his newly formed band Legacy could practice their music, write songs and entertain the town. The band toured Ontario performing Mark’s original songs and cover tunes. They had a taste of “life on the road”. In the late 70’s Mark opened a music store on the Lakeshore in Etobicoke which over time, and with the support of Mary Anne, became a successful boutique music shop known as “Seagully’s” in Bloor West Village. In 1982, Mark and fellow musicians put on a benefit concert to help raise money for “The Terry Fox Run”. Mark was a natural performer, most comfortable on stage. In 1988, the store, Seagully’s was featured on the cover of Canadian Music Trade Magazine.
In semi-retirement, in 2001, Mark moved to a home in another small town, Schomberg Ont., where he turned an existing detached structure into a recording studio. He named it JAM Music Studios after his daughters – Jackie, Anne-Elizabeth, and Melissa. He continued recording music, writing music, giving guitar lessons and sharing his experiences with aspiring young musicians.
In his free time Mark enjoyed skating, tennis, sailing, RV’ing and visiting his favorite spot – Myrtle Beach.
Mark is survived by his friend and soulmate of 30 years, Laura, brother Dan (Gay), sister Gail (Cal), daughters Anne-Elizabeth (Ian), Jacalynn, Melissa (Mike). Also fondly remembered by nieces Christy (Stephen), Katie (Alex), Bonna-Lynn (Allan) and nephews Scott (Dana), Andrew (Diane), Tim (Kerry) and David (Anca). Predeceased by parents Florence and Bill Pengilly.
