Marjorie Cross

Marjorie Phyllis Cross passed away peacefully in her home on March 23, 2024.  She was just 5 days shy of her 100th birthday.

Phyllis led a long and wonderful life.  Born on a farm in Ashburn she learned to love animals and nature.  She joined the army during WWII and was a member of CWAC.  She met her future husband, Leslie, while in the service.  After they were married, Phyllis left the army but worked as a bomb girl until the end of the war.

Although they had the opportunity to remain in Ashburn on a farm, Leslie was a city boy at heart so they moved to Toronto to begin their life together.  When her first child, David was born, she became a full time wife and mother taking care of what eventually would be four children.

When the youngest, Daryl was old enough to fend for himself, Phyllis went to work at the Queen Street Mental Centre until her retirement at the age of 65.  For the next 3 years, she attended Adult Day School learning wordprocessing and business and then volunteered at Frank Oke Secondary School assisting special education children with reading.

Phyllis was an avid sports fan.  She followed and cheered for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays no matter what kind of year they were having!  Phyllis and Douglas attended many opening day Blue Jays games until the trek down to the stadium became a bit too much.  She attended almost all of her daughter, Denise’s ball games and eventually took on the role of announcer for the York Ladies’ Fastball League until it folded in the 1990’s.

Phyllis is predeceased by her husband, Leslie Cross; parents Elsie and Robert Goose and sisters Bernice and Muriel “Betty”.  She is survived by her four children, David, Denise, Douglas and Daryl.

Rest in peace, Mum!  You will be missed by all who knew you.  When we see a bright star in the sky, we will know that it is you looking down on us
