On December 4, 2021 our mom, Maria Di Mondo, peacefully passed away from this life into the next.

Her life, was her story.

Maria was a Superwoman: Kind, Compassionate, Faithful, Generous, Wise, Curious, Spirited, Resilient, Courageous, Talented, Entertaining and Stylish (and much much more).

She was born in a small Italian village to parents, Nicola and Margherita Melfi, she was the eldest of four children. At a young age it was foretold that she would cross the Atlantic, marry a stranger in foreign lands and then have three children. She did.

Maria married our father ‘Ralph’. With a large combined Italian family, we were raised as children to cherish and preserve family – to protect, respect, forgive and support those we love through good times and bad.

Mom had a strong faith that inspired her to pray daily. She humbled us teaching us to ‘love our neighbour’ through service, random acts of kindness and the value of humility. In Italian she often said “amarsi non costa nulla” - “love one another it does not cost anything”.

Maria had no formal degree and yet she was our greatest teacher and a natural mentor to others. She was naturally curious inspiring us to learn. She did not travel the world. But she did travel relentlessly through the streets of Toronto driving us (and as many of the neighbours’ children that would fit in dad’s old Chevrolet) to swim lessons, Italian school, skating, piano and tennis lessons, to name just a few.

When it came to caring for her children, family and friends mom seemed to have an endless energy. She loved to sing when waking her children up at 7:00am to ensure they did not oversleep. She loved to cook and hosted countless celebrations. Maria and her sister Grazia were best friends, ‘fashionistas’ who loved to sew outfits for special occasions. Her brothers, Luigi and Carmine, also shared a special connection with her and many fun times together. One of Maria’s greatest joys was being a “nonna”, she found no greater joy than spending time with her grandchildren and showering them with love. Mom also had a passion for gardening and spent hours tending to her flowers, fruits and vegetables.

The last few years of Maria’s life she has remained silent. But mom’s voice, laughter, and spirit live within us. She shaped our lives in ordinary ways and her love is the recording that will play in our hearts and minds forever.

Maria, daughter, sister, wife, mom, nonna, family, friend, a woman whose ordinary life impacted others in extraordinary ways.

Mom, we love you. We miss you. Please rest easy as we know God has you in a beautiful place surrounded by people that love you.

Maria was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Ralph Di Mondo, her brothers, Luigi Melfi and Carmine Melfi, and is survived by her sister, Grazia. Maria was cherished by her children, Saverio, Nick and Carmelina, much loved by her daughters-in-law Angela and Lorraine. As a nonna she adored her grandchildren, Raffaele, Anthony, Zoe, Alexandra, and Lauren. She was blessed by the birth of her great grandson, Elias.

Maria will be sadly missed by her loving sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Many thanks to the caregivers, Natty and Kris for their care and compassion.

Friends and Family are all welcome to visit Ward Funeral Home, 4671 Highway 7, Woodbridge (just west of Pine Valley Drive), on Thursday, December 9th, 2021 from 4pm - 9pm and on Friday, December 10th, 2021 from 4pm to 9pm.
To safely manage and adhere to current social distancing requirements, please RSVP for the visitation and Mass. Wearing of masks or face coverings by everyone remains mandatory as per provincial regulations.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 100 Bainbridge Ave., Woodbridge, Ontario, L4L 3Y1, on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 10am.
