Mahase Sookhoo
November 18, 1935 - October 27, 2022
Mahase Sookhoo, 86, peacefully passed away at Burton Manor (Brampton, Ontario) on Thursday, October 27, 2022.
Mahase was born on November 18, 1935 in Plantation Port Maurant, Guyana, to Indrenia Jagnarnauth and Loolun Sookhoo. John and Bettia, his siblings, welcomed him. His brother Bob and sister Hemwattie followed.
In his youth, Mahase worked outside the home to help financially support his then single and very poor mother. With little education but eager to learn, the foreman at Bookers Sugar Estate entrusted Mahase to do special jobs and taught him to drive dragline excavators. Mahase’s friends also taught him mechanical skills.
At a friend's wedding, Mahase noticed an attractive young woman named Julia Ragubance. Julia’s father was deceased and she lived with her eldest brother. Following tradition, Mahase sought Julia’s brother’s permission to marry her. After a year of anxious waiting and regular visits at her brother’s home, Mahase and Julia were married on January 11, 1959.
Mahase continued working hard, and he and Julia elevated the family out of poverty. Their hard work and prosperity enabled them to provide better opportunities for the family. However, they knew a better life existed for their children outside of Guyana. In 1972, leaving behind family, friends, and worldly possessions, the family moved to Canada.
Immigrating to Canada caused severe economic hardship however, Mahase and Julia worked hard and hustled to elevate the family out of poverty once again. Mahase leveraged his mechanical skills and learned new skills to have a successful career as a mechanic. He repaired large equipment for several well known companies and often worked multiple side jobs to support the family. At age 69, he retired from Purolator. Always anxious to stay busy, Mahase went back to work after retirement and worked as a security agent at the Toronto airport until he was 75.
Mahase lived a life of service. He always put others' needs before himself. If he had it, he would give it to you, or he would help you get it. He used his skills and generosity to help others move above their stations in life. He recognized the importance of providing financially for his family, but he also knew that there was more to life than material success. When the missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints knocked on the Sookhoos’ door, he was prepared to accept the gospel of Jesus Christ because he was aligned with the selfless love of the Savior. In 1975, Mahase and the family joined the Church. Their membership in the Church has brought them deep joy, rich associations, and countless blessings.
Julia and Mahase were married for 62 years and at the time of his passing were the proud parents of five children: Roy (Lori), Rudy (Gena), Randy (Maureen), Christina Smith (Matt), and Steven (Kate), 19 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, John, and his two sisters, Bettia and Hemwattie.
The funeral service will be Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1624 Wanless Drive, in Brampton. The viewing will take place at the Church prior to the funeral service on Saturday, November 5 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow the service at Brampton Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 10061 Chinguacousy Rd, Brampton.
