Lieutenant Colonel Noreen Tilley
November 17, 1929 – September 4, 2017
Lieutenant-Colonel Noreen Tilley (née Dougall) was born in Galt, Ontario, where her parents were serving as Salvation Army Officers. She attended school in Ontario, including nurses training at the Toronto Grace Hospital. She was commissioned as an Officer in 1951 and appointed to Neepawa, Manitoba, and Wiarton, Thorold, and Orangeville, Ontario, before marrying Hugh Tilley on the 25th of June 1954.
Over the next 45 years Noreen and Hugh served in Corps work and in Public Relations in appointments from Victoria to Montreal. Noreen’s last appointment before retirement in 1996 was as Research Assistant in the Government Relations Office in Ottawa, and Retired Officers’ Coordinator for Ottawa Valley.
Noreen’s parents John and Christina Dougall had built a cottage in the 1950s near Jackson’s Point Camp, and following retirement Noreen and Hugh made the cottage their home. They soldiered at Georgina Community Church, where Hugh was Bandmaster and Noreen continued her work with women’s ministries; they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Jackson’s Point in 2004.
In 2010 Noreen and Hugh decided to sell the cottage and make the move to the Meighen Retirement Residence in Toronto, where they were surrounded by friends both there and at Yorkminster Citadel, where they transferred as soldiers.
Hugh was Promoted to Glory in October of 2015, not long after their 60th wedding anniversary. Noreen leaves behind daughters Joanne and Elizabeth, and grandson Colin Patrick.
His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.
Matthew 25:21
