Lorne Smith

June 23, 1975 — November 5, 2022

Lorne Smith

Lorne passed away as he would have wanted. No fanfare, just having his wife holding onto him, and family with him. While he may have desired no great fanfare, his passing on November 5, 2022 will reverberate throughout the many circles in which he was associated, be it family, neighbourhood, parish or community. To say no one can fill his size 12 shoes, you would think we were talking literally. But no, we are talking figuratively because this is indeed a man who will be missed.

Lorne was born June 23, 1975 in Toronto. For the past fifteen years he was the loving and devoted husband to Shannon (Gaskell) Smith, and adoring father to their two beautiful children, nine year old Samuel and four year old Ainslie. They will all dearly miss Daddy.

Lorne worked a number of different jobs in his early years, but found his niche early on when he joined his best friend Steve at Hi-Lon Glass. Eventually Lorne became a right-hand man for Steve who ran the company the past number of years.

Shannon and Lorne would agree that the fifteen glorious years they had together provided the opportunity for them to enjoy their favourite activities together; family gatherings in Ontario and Cape Breton, travel, canoeing, and so on. Lorne was a lover of history, culture, and people, and spending time with others telling stories and sharing laughs was one of his favourite things to do. A devout man, he loved helping others, always willing to lend a helping hand to friend and stranger alike.

He is survived by his wife Shannon, his children Sam and Ainslie, his father Don and stepmom Deb Smith (Creemore), brother Fraser (Toronto), ‘brother’ Steven Pilon (Milton), parents-in-law Tom and Agnes Gaskell (Cape Breton), brother-in-law TJ Gaskell (Cape Breton), nephews Tommy and Noah and niece Sadie (all of Cape Breton). He is also survived by uncles Mac Smith, Tom (Cathy) and Ray (Eileen) Griffith, aunts Marianne Herbert, Maureen Robinson, and Caryl Phillips, and many cherished cousins.

Lorne was predeceased by his mother Diane Griffith-Smith, as well as uncles Joe Griffith, Rick Robinson, Len Herbert, and aunt Fay Smith.
