After a long and valiant battle with cancer Lieut. Colonel Joan Canning was Promoted to Glory on Tuesday, Sept 26, 2017. She was the beloved daughter of Bertha Canning and the late Lewis Canning of Moncton, New Brunswick.
She is survived by her loving mother, Bertha, four sisters, Majors Louise (Rick) Embree, Carol (Ross) Harrie, Lorraine (Fred) Veysey, June Mulligan, and one brother David Canning. She was predeceased by her father Lewis Canning and her brother Laurie Canning. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A native of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, Lieut. Colonel Canning was ordained and commissioned as a Salvation Army officer in June 1983. After commissioning, Joan held numerous pastoral, youth, teaching and administration positions in four countries; Canada, Bermuda, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Her appointments included Divisional Youth Secretary in Bermuda and Toronto, Executive Director of SAWSO (The Salvation Army World Service Office) for USA National Headquarters, Washington, DC. Under Secretary for the Americas and Caribbean Zone at The Salvation Army International Headquarters in London. Her last appointment was Assistant Chief Secretary at Territorial Headquarters in the Canada and Bermuda Territory.
Joan held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical and Theological Studies from Booth College, and a Master of Theological Studies from Tyndale Seminary and University. She also held a Certificate in Management from Simon Frazer University.
Joan loved life and the great outdoors. She enjoyed spending time with nieces and nephews, friends and family. People were her passion and she had a positive impact on those she met. Her faith sustained her throughout her entire journey.
Friends and family are invited to visit at Wards Funeral Home 4671 Highway 7, Woodbridge, Ontario on Friday, September 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral Service will be held at the Salvation Army North York Temple, 25 Centre Avenue, Toronto, Ontario on Saturday, September 30 at 1pm. General Linda Bond (Rtd) officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Salvation Army Moncton Citadel Community Church on Saturday, October 7 at 10am. Viewing will take place at Fair Haven Funeral Home, 1177 Salisbury Road, Moncton, NB on Friday, October 6 from 4-6pm.
