Leo Mior (November 19, 1950 - October 16, 2021) — Loving Husband, Father, Brother, Friend

On October 16, 2021, Leo Mior, 70, died peacefully in his home with his wife by his side. Born November 19, 1950, in Taiedo, Italy, to Angela and Luigi Mior, he is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Katie Mior, their two daughters, Lisa and Kate Mior, and his siblings, Anna Teed and Giuliano Mior.

Born in Taiedo di Chions, in the province of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy, Leo immigrated to Canada with his mother, Angela Mior, a year after his birth, settling in Toronto. He grew up in North Etobicoke, attending Central Technical School for a year, then transferring to Nelson A. Boyland Collegiate Institute for the remainder of his secondary education, along with his sister Anna and brother Giuliano. Naturally charismatic and one who made friends easily, it was there that he met his life-long friends, John Chappel and Cornell Charade The Mior household became the relegated clubhouse and general open house for many young adults in the neighbourhood, as they gathered to play and listen to music, request a detailed t-shirt design from Leo, or simply enjoy each other’s company.

An accomplished scholar, he studied engineering at the University of Toronto, graduating with a Bachelor of Science. A brilliant mind when it came to problem-solving, industrial mainframe design, and computer programming, Leo gladly shared his love of STEM learning with any who crossed his path — whether it was one of his students at Ryerson University, his children with their math homework, or friends and family who sought his expertise with a challenging technical issue. He went on to build and later consult on the building of mainframes for many companies, including TransCanada Pipeline, the Hamilton Wentworth Police Department, and Lampton Nuclear Power Plant, to name a few.

From surreal and captivating sketches and serene watercolour paintings to highly-detailed model train and slot-car landscape tracks and masterful wood-worked pieces, Leo was a true artist and craftsman. His artistic abilities shone brightest, however, when he had a musical instrument in his hands. As well, starting at a young age, Leo exhibited prodigious musicality. An accomplished accordionist by the age of seven — a talent he continued to showcase throughout his life — he never passed up an opportunity to serenade any in his vicinity with a bar or two of Lady of Spain or Smoke on the Water. Yet his true love lay with his guitars. His children fondly remember early Sunday morning wake-up calls in the form of the first three bars of Iron Man, Purple Haze, or All Along the Watchtower. He generously shared his expertise with anyone who wanted a few lessons to get themselves started, needed a hand sourcing or fixing an instrument or simply wished to play a few songs with him.

However, no matter what activity he engaged in, Leo sought to perfect all endeavours. From childhood, he studied martial arts, achieving the distinguished rank of black belt in Judo and brown belt in Jiu-jitsu, and often overcame opponents that outclassed him in competition. He was a fierce chess competitor and pool, ensuring a demanding game for anyone who dared to challenge him. His gleeful chiding both infuriated and brought laughter to any who participated or simply spectated, and as a result, there was never a shortage of challengers eager to join him.

Leo lived life to the fullest, taking in the riches of the world with every available opportunity. He loved to travel, whether it was a long ride on his Laverda motorcycle or road trips across the USA and Canada with Katie or his friends. In his twenties, Leo purchased a boat and embarked upon a year-long voyage through the Bahamas. Living off the coast of Jupiter Island, he navigated the waters of the region, braving the mysteries of the Bermuda triangle, and making new friends along the way.

Compassion was, ultimately, the true defining characteristic of Leo Mior. He was as caring for animals as he was for the people in his life, as demonstrated by the veritable menagerie of animals he had rescued over the years, from hurt or abandoned turtles, rabbits, chickens, cats, dogs, and owls. Human or creature, if help was needed, Leo would never fail to extend a caring hand.

As anyone who felt Leo’s presence in their life would say, he was a renaissance man and truly special. His charismatic charm, infectious humour, and sheer brilliance have left a lasting impact on so many people, ensuring an imperishable legacy that will reach for decades beyond his death.
