Ken’s Story
Kenneth Lloyd Giles July 28, 1935-October 29, 2024
Ken Giles was a well known and respected journalist for over 50 years. He suffered a heart attack on October 29, 2024 and passed away in Runnymede Hospital where he was recovering from C Difficile.
His love of sports began in early childhood. Ken attempted to play lacrosse but found his handicap caused by Cerebral Palsy made this impossible.
His love of sports continued and followed Ken to Brampton High School, where he covered the school teams for the local newspaper.
After High School he worked as a reporter for the Peel Gazette, Brampton Conservator, Brampton Times, and the with the Brampton Guardian.
Still wanting to take active participation in sports, he started refereeing lacrosse and basketball.
And eventually refereed Junior A and Major Senior Lacrosse games.
Ken was a founding member of the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame, he continued as a member of the selection committee up until present day. Eventually Ken was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Brampton recognized Ken’s contributions by naming the Ken Gile’s arena.
Ken was an old school journalist that attended games and events, before writing his newspaper articles he would attend the games, taking detailed information about the event.
