Karin Smidt Clausen
passed away peacefully from natural causes on Thursday March 24th, 2016 at Maple Grove Care Community in Brampton.
Karin was born May 1st in Aarup, Denmark, and the eldest of three girls. After schooling in Aarup she trained as a hat maker and also worked as a children’s nanny. During the war years Karin met her future husband Hans Martin and they were married in 1944. She became a partner on the family farm and full-time mother raising three boys. In 1957, the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Embro, Ontario on a 100 acre dairy farm. Karin also worked for a time as a store clerk in the nearby community. Later in life, she moved to be near her family in Brampton and took a hospital job for a short time before becoming engaged as a fleet dispatcher for her sons towing business. She retired in 1995 and spent her remaining years in Brampton since 2011 as a resident of the Maple Grove Care Community.
Although Karin was a consumate cook and took on many diverse endeavours with gusto, her greatest interest was really being a dispatcher a position she held for 24 years. She took on this challenging job with unmatched passion and dedication. At different times she took on concrete work, carpentry and other (for the time considered) "man's" work always giving it her full effort.
Karin's greatest frustration without question was losing her ability to speak after suffering a stroke, which forced her to retired from her favorite activity as a dispatcher. She was strong minded and independent though and even with the disability, continued to live on her own as long as physically possible.
Karin was predeceased by her parents Smidt and Elly Clausen and is survived by her three sons Chris (Conchita), Comox BC, Hans (Carolyn) Brampton, Ontario, Sven Erik (Jette) Rudkoebing, Denmark, her sisters Jenny and Lissa (Ulrik) in Denmark, grand children Eric, Lynette, Jason, Jennifer, Jonathan and Asbjoern, nine great grand children, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Flowers gratefully declined. Karin loved children and animals, if desired please make a donation to a charity of your choice in her memory.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Ibrahim and the staff at Maple Grove Care Community.
