Joseph Walter Hugh Elberton Sandiford, who was known to most of his friends and family as “Hugh”, was born on June 17th 1946, in St. Simon’s, in the parish of St. Andrew, Barbados; departed this life on August 29th, 2019 in Mississauga Ontario, aged 73.
He was the son of Winston and Hilda Sandiford (both predeceased), and brother to Verne (predeceased), Randall, Nathalie, Erskine, Selbee, Elma, Anita and Amy.
Along with his former wife Margaret, he was father to Julien and Christine, and grandfather to Alexis and Christopher.
After arriving in Canada in 1965, he graduated from Forest Hill Collegiate Institute in Toronto, before embarking on a long career at the Canada Post Corporation from which he retired in 2002.
He was an active member of the church community at Christ Church Anglican in Brampton, serving for many years as a warden. Following his retirement, he went on several development trips with the church which saw him travel to the Far East and Africa.
He also volunteered in the community-at-large, working with various hospices, as well as with former inmates who were re-entering society.
He had a variety of interests including gardening, photography, and most notably cake decorating, in which he was very accomplished. Throughout his life he made countless cakes for friends, family, and even strangers to whom he was recommended, to commemorate all manner of special occasions.
He will be missed by those who knew him.
In place of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to either the Canadian Lung Association or Christ Church Anglican in Brampton.
