POWERS, JOHN EDWARD January 15, 1919 – January 2, 2016. A life long resident of Toronto. World War II RCAF Veteran. Distinguished Flying Cross. Survived by his children, John (Alice) New Denver BC, Claire (Tom) Burk’s Falls ON, Frank (Cathy) Dunnville ON, Catherine (Hans) Toronto ON and daughter-in-law Catherine Beaupre Elmsdale NS; grandfather of nine and great grandfather of five. Predeceased by his parents Frank Powers, Emily Homard, his loving wife, Lilian R. Powers (nee Bankes) 1972 and his son, Lawrence (Larry) G. 2010, his brothers Rev. Raymond Powers CSSR 2000 and Harold (Brother Hilary FSC) 2006, and his sister Claire Kathleen 1944. John joined Canada Customs as an investigator following the war and worked there until his retirement in 1978.
A baseball fan from the CYO league of his youth, to the Toronto Blue Jays. He loved to watch the pre-expansion NHL, favouring the Toronto Maple Leafs and followed the CFL, cheering on the Argonauts. John passed on to his children a love of the outdoors through camping trips and cottaging in the Haliburton Highlands. He died at Weston Terrace LTC after a short illness.
Friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home 2035 Weston Road (north of Lawrence Ave) Weston, on Monday, January 4th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and on Tuesday, January 5th from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
