John William MacDonald “MAC”
87 years, of Toronto, Ontario
Passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto. Known as “Jack” to his immediate family, he was born to the late Roderick John and the late Edith (Lamorie) MacDonald, on May 5, 1926, in Blind River, Ontario. Corporal John William MacDonald served on Active Service with the Canadian Army from 1944 to 1948, and was the recipient of the CVSM and the War Medal. On February 25, 1950, Mac married the late Jean McLaughlin, his wee Scottish lassie, in Toronto, where they lived together for the next 57 years.
Mac is survived by his daughter: Debra (MacDonald) Steele, Ottawa, Ontario, and his two grandchildren: David John Robert Steele, Toronto; and Rachel Johanna Steele, Ottawa. He is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his brothers and sisters: Margaret Pollock, Jim MacDonald, Ron MacDonald, Kay Kettlewell, and Percy “Bud” MacDonald, all of Sudbury; Doris Frederick, Mindemoya; Lorne MacDonald, Barrie; Judy Grieves, Sudbury; and Janice MacDonald, North Bay. He was predeceased by Mickey Sheppard, Victoria, B.C.; Marion Newstead, Laurine MacQueen, and Allan MacDonald, all of Sudbury; and half-sisters Rhoda Hagan and Ellen Clayton. Lovingly remembered also by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mac served clients in Toronto’s food, beverage and entertainment industries his entire career. He shared his passion for horses and riding with his daughter. Mac was known for being a real gentleman, a caring and generous person always ready to share a Werther or “few” to put a smile in the day. He will be remembered for his courage and his resilience. His daughter and grandchildren will always remember him as a loving and devoted husband, a great father and a truly awesome Papa.
Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home, 4671 Hwy.7 (west of Pine Valley Dr.), Woodbridge, 905-851-9100, on Monday, December 2, from 2-4 pm & 7-9pm. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel on Tuesday, December 3rd at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception. Interment will take place at Beechwood Cemetery, Concord. As expressions of sympathy, donations to The Poppy Trust Fund, The Royal Canadian Legion, or The Canadian Hearing Society, would be greatly appreciated by the family.
