John Charles
January 5, 1961 - May 16, 2023
John Francis Charles, also affectionately known as Bolo, was born to Julia Charles and Oliver Charles on January 5th 1961 in Tivoli St. Andrew’s, on the island of Grenada . He was the 5th of their seven children together. John grew up to be a lover of music and sports with his favourite sport been cricket. He actively participated in this sport as a player and in the official role as an umpire. After completing his education at the Tivoli R. C. School, he migrated to the island of Trinidad and Tobago where he worked in the construction field acquiring his masonry and carpentry skills. Bolo's true passion, however, was organizing and playing short knee mass. He would organize the band, composed some of the songs, and stayed up late into the nights sewing the clothes. It was no surprise to see him playing his favourite mass in Caribana or any other occasion he deemed warranted his presence.
Bolo has left behind, to celebrate his short life with us, his mother Julia “Mammy Jule” Charles, and his sisters Olive “Moyh" Julien and Merlin Stafford and brothers Joseph “Papoo” Charles, Ralon Stafford and Derrick Houston all residing in Grenada. Sisters Dennise “Punny” Nelson, Marjorie Roberts and Jean Hypolite residing in the United States and sister Wilma Baptiste in St. Martin. Brothers-in-law Raphael “Tabay” Baptiste, Lloyd “Traps” Roberts and Rodney “Gravels” Nelson and Zepherine Julien. Many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends including, Londa Charles, Leroy ”Bacoo” Brizan, Kenneth “Boar” Lewis, Erma Hillaire, Sheri Ann Charles, Jane Charles, Tesheen and Kashka Laborde and Devon and Marcia, and last but not least Ruth Telesford. Also countless others who visited and prayed with him to ensure his final days were spent with ease and comfort.
Bolo was deeply committed to family and friends and will do all he can for anyone who ask of him. He was always the jovial life of the party guy who kept the party going. He will be greatly missed as he has taken his last tumbo on May 16, 2023. May his soul rest in peace.
