Johanna emigrated from the Netherlands after WW 2, met and married her husband Herman and had two sons, Ed and Mike. They both worked hard to buy their Brampton family home which now belongs to their granddaughter, Danielle. It is a toss-up as to which job was her favourite, Dixie Cup, her first job in Canada where she worked lots of overtime as she didn’t have enough grasp of English to refuse when it was offered, or Sheridan College, her last job before retirement where she loved the energy of the young people.
Johanna’s first kiss was given to a Canadian soldier on Liberation Day in the Netherlands, as she tells it she surprised herself how she ran up and laid one on him. She was a selfless mother, mother-in-law and Oma, and her two grandchildren, Danielle and Mark were her world. Johanna & Herman lost Mike to childhood cancer in 1984 and Johanna promptly quit her Sheridan College job to nurse him at home, administering the loving care of a mother up to his death. Sheridan College came knocking soon after, wanting their stellar employee back. Johanna had a great sense of humour and family was everything to her. The family wishes to thank the staff at Grace Manor, 2 north, for their care in Johanna’s later years.
