Joan Wood (nee Sheppard) –Dearly beloved wife of Jack Wood, died peacefully on October 8th at the Ian Anderson House in Oakville, Ontario. Joan was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario, where she attended St. Patrick’s School, Loretto Academy and NFCVI. She then graduated from the University of Toronto in Physiotherapy. After graduation, she moved to Houston, Texas, to help develop a Physiotherapy Department in the new Houston Hospital. Houston sent her to Los Angeles to train in the rehabilitation of returning military personnel, especially paraplegics. She returned from Houston to Niagara Falls to head up the Physiotherapy Department of Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Joan married Jack Wood in 1961 and later moved to Trinidad, W.I., for 6 years. They returned to Canada and settled in Oakville in 1969. Jack’s work took him to many parts of the world and Joan accompanied him on most of these trips. Joan became a volunteer with the Oakville Public Library, initially reading for the “Radio Reading Service for the blind and print handicapped” at the Woodside Branch. Joan then delivered books to the shut-ins and finally with Jack, sorted and packed discarded library books for what became the current Central Branch Semi Annual Book Sale.
Joan is survived by her husband Jack, brother John, brother-in-law John Broderick, Q.C., and many nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her father Joseph Sheppard, mother Marion, brother Jim, sister Helen Broderick and brother Frank.
Joan will be buried in the family plot in Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls.
