After a life well lived and in service of others, God has called Joan home. On Friday February 2, 2024, Joan passed away peacefully in her sleep at home with her family.
Born on March 11, 1942 in Buckingham Quebec to Mary and Edmund Costello, Joan met the love of her life Bill and they were married in 1962. The family moved to Brampton in 1972.
A strong supporter of Catholic Education, Joan volunteered as a study hall monitor in the infancy of Cardinal Leger in 1978 and eventually was hired as a secretary in the Library and then in Attendance until her retirement in 2017. In her work as a secretary at Cardinal Leger Catholic Secondary School, and as mentioned at her retirement, Joan trained many Principals and Vice Principals in “her” ways. Joan always had hot chocolate available in the library for the students who arrived on the early buses from Malton and Orangeville and in the attendance office, always had candy at the ready for those who needed something sweet.
Joan was known to arrive at the school early in the morning to get the coffee pot on for staff. Then she would stay late to help with any extra circular activities that the school had. She was known for her tough love approach with students who would rather get into uniform, instead of seeing her for a dress pass.
Joan rarely missed a band performance, school play, dance competition or hockey game, as she loved to see her grandchildren show off their talents.
Joan also volunteered with the Girl Guides of Canada where she was a pack leader for over 10
years. She traveled with the Girls Guides to Switzerland, Germany, England and Belgium.
She spent many hours in line to get her hands on Cabbage Patch dolls or strategically hunting for Beanie Babies
Joan’s strong Catholic faith was instilled in her by her mother. She endeavored to live out that faith in every aspect of her life. She served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for many years.
Joan is predeceased by her daughter Christine (Sunil) and is survived by her devoted husband Bill, by her children, Carol (Joe) and Daryle (Teresa). Loved by her grandchildren Stephanie (Craig), Nicole (Dan), Eryka, Joseph, Eddie and Sean. Her spunky spirit lives on in her two great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Jean (Bill) Peggy (Gail).
Joan would want you to know two things:
Beware Toronto Maple Leaf fans, the Montreal Canadians might have some divine intervention this year with the Stanley Cup.
Remember, never ketchup on hotdogs… only mustard
