Joan Reid Studd Hickey

November 16, 1925-May 23, 2020

Joan Reid Studd Hickey, beloved mother and wife, departed this life early Saturday morning, May 23rd, 2020 at her residence in Toronto.

Joan was born in Halifax, N.S., the youngest daughter to the late William Studd and the late Sarah Roper Studd. She was predeceased by her sister, Betty, and brother, David.

She was the wife of D. Ronald Hickey, also of Toronto, and mother to daughter Kristine Koken, and sons and their wives Peter and Suzan Koken, Robert and Louisa Koken, and Bruce Koken and his wife, Karen Sonn. She was also the loving grandmother to Jeffrey Pleau, Jason Pleau, Kendra (Koken) Guersoy, Kyle Koken, Kate Koken, Anna Koken, Reid Koken and Savoy Koken. She also had five great-grandchildren: Jessica Pleau, Sarah Pleau, Adam Pleau, James Pleau and Leo Guersoy. She was aunt to Brian Delo and stepmother to Carolyn (Hickey) Sprague and the late Alison Hickey.

Joan spent her working life as a dedicated nurse, working at Montreal General Hospital and Sweetsburg Hospital (Cowansville, PQ). For most of her career she was an honored and respected occupational health nurse at Petrofina and Suncor. She retired in 1982.

She and Ron left Montreal in 1980 for the wide open spaces of Alberta, residing in Calgary until 2011. They made many friends while there, enjoying bridge parties, and lovingly entertaining and hosting numerous visits by their children and grandchildren.

Upon relocating to Ontario, Joan and Ron lived in Mississauga before taking up residence in Toronto at The Balmoral Club retirement facility. Eventually, Joan was overtaken by dementia but still found the simple joys in life, even spending time in her last hours enjoying the fresh air, sunshine and pristeen blue skies from the rooftop terrace of her residence. Blue, so appropriately, was our mother’s favourite color.

Mom and Mum to her kids and Nannie to her grandkids and great-grandkids, will always be remembered for her sharp wit, kindness and generosity, for the warmth of her smile and the constant twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes.

She’s with the angels now. But we’ll see you once again on the bright side of the road.

We’re better because of you and will love you always.
