Janna Roelfina Smid was born on September 21, 1924 in Borger, the Netherlands and grew up on a farm in Nieuw Buinen. She became a nurse and eventually met a young man from the city, Anthonie, who was studying to become a Minister of the Word. They married March 21, 1951 in Nieuw Buinen and soon
immigrated to Canada. She lovingly supported her husband in the ministry. Following God’s call, they served in 7 different congregations in Alberta, Ontario and California. They retired in Sarnia, and later moved to Holland Christian Homes in Brampton, Ontario.
They were blessed with 7 children, 6 boys and 1 girl, born in different parts of the country. They enjoyed camping, fishing and long road trips. In retirement, Janna and Anthony traveled often to see their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Janna managed a large family with care and devotion. She never forgot whose turn it was to wash or dry the dishes! Her desire to care for her children never faded—somehow, the refrigerator in her room was always stocked with goodies, even to the day of her passing.
Janna had a deep yet simple faith.
She often referred to Psalm 125 vs 1, 2,
which she knew from memory:
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be shaken but endures forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds His people
both now and forevermore.
She will be sadly missed by
her family, friends and those
whose lives she has touched..
Yet, we rest on the same hope:
Trust in Him at all times, O people;
Pour out your hearts to him,
For God is our refuge. Psalm 62:8
