JACK GALWAY

November 9, 1921 to March 22, 2014
RCAF “Snowy Owl” 420 Squadron 1943 to 1945
Clerk/Treasurer/Chief Administrative Officer of Brampton 1948 to 1983

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Galway on March 22, 2014, in his ninety-third year, surrounded by his loving family, in the City of Brampton. Devoted and loving husband and best friend for sixty-three years to Shirley [Bartlett][ deceased May 10, 2010], Jack was a wonderful father, role-model and source of strength for his three children, David [Alison Burns], Diane [Gary] and Peter [Kim]. He will be missed by his grandchildren Chris Patterson [Winnie Tsang], Tim Patterson [Denise], Mathew, Alex, Caitie, Rachel and Evan and MacKenzie Galway as well as great grandchildren Jade, Evan and Shayne.
Jack was born in St. Catharines and attended St. Catharines Collegiate where he was an excellent student and athlete. He attended the University of Toronto on the J.S. McLean Scholarship but left his studies in 1942 to volunteer in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he trained as a Navigator. Shipping overseas in 1943, Jack was assigned to 420 Squadron, based at Tholthorpe, England where he flew in 25 night missions over Germany in Halifax bombers. At the end of the war in Europe, he converted to Lancaster bombers and flew back to Canada in June, 1945.
Jack returned to his studies at the University of Toronto, married Shirley Bartlett in September,1946 and took a job as the Clerk/Treasurer of Brampton in 1948. The population at that time was 6,000. He remained in this position and later as Chief Administrative Officer until his retirement in 1983. During his 35 year career, he served nine mayors and, as Brampton's most senior civil servant, participated in Brampton's extraordinary expansion.
Jack excelled at most sports but he was an extraordinarily talented golfer. At sixteen years of age, he won the Men's Championship at the Niagara on the Lake Golf Club. He went on to win three more championships at this course before going off to U of T. He was a member of the Brampton Golf Club for many years and continued his winning ways throughout the more than seventy-five years he actively played the sport. In 1988, Brampton opened the Peel Village Golf Course and Jack's contribution to the City of Brampton and the game of golf was honoured when the clubhouse was named The Jack Galway Club House. Jack continued to play golf regularly well into his eighties and was an inspiration for his two sons and his regular weekly group of “golf sons”.
After retirement, Jack and Shirley divided their time between the family cottage on Lake Simcoe, their pool at Parkview Place and travel with friends. Family gatherings and civic and church functions filled out their busy retirement years.
As well as his war medals, Jack received the Centennial Medal awarded for valuable service to Canada from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, during the Royal visit of 1973.
Jack was a respected servant to Brampton over his long career. He was a man whose integrity was forged by an intense sense of duty to his family, to his community and to his country. His generation has been referred to in literature as the “ Greatest Generation” and Jack Galway, like so many in Canada who lived through these tumultuous times of the 20th Century, was a living example of this term.
The family would like to thank Jack's live-in caregiver for the last three years, Marilez Abrasia, for her tireless and expert work and dedication to our father during this difficult time. Neighbours Lee and Carol and PSW's Yvette, Maria and Joy also deserve special mention.
According to Jack's wishes, cremation has taken place. Jack's ashes will be interred next to his beloved wife Shirley in the family plot at the Brampton Cemetery following a private memorial service at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations can be made on his behalf to Easter Seals Ontario, The Alzheimer's Society or The Canadian Cancer Society. Online expressions of condolences can be by visiting the Book of Memories at www.wardfuneralhome.com
